Rain, night, the unexpected: a plan B for your male dog’s pee
The storm at eleven at night, a fever, a shift that runs late. Walks remain the rule: here we organise the exception.
In this guide
Plan B is prepared on a sunny day
The classic mistake is thinking about it during the storm: your dog has never seen that spot, you are in a hurry, and it ends badly for both of you. A plan B only works if it exists BEFORE: a fixed corner your dog has already sniffed and used a few times, so that when you need it, it is not something new but a habit in reserve.
Choose the spot following the Method: first watch how your dog uses the space, then choose the spot, and do not keep moving it. Indoors or on the balcony (for the balcony there is a dedicated guide, neighbours and smells included). The training pad protects the floor; if your male lifts his leg, the stream goes upwards and he needs a target: a PIPPI vertical toilet, which catches it in the tray and is emptied into the toilet.
How to teach a “reserve” spot
The same way as the main spot, just with less pressure: give him time to get to know it without forcing him, and reward him when he uses it. Some dogs use it almost straight away, others need several weeks: the honest timings apply here too. The important thing is not to use it as a punishment or a shortcut: it is an extra option, not a reason to skip a walk.
When plan B becomes plan A
If you notice the exceptions are becoming the rule (work has changed, your dog is getting older, the stairs have become an obstacle), the issue is no longer the unexpected: it is organising the new normal, while keeping every walk that is still possible. For that change there is the guide on when your dog can no longer go out as before.
And the night? It works like the rain: a late last trip out, evening meals at fixed times, and plan B ready for puppies who cannot yet last the whole night and older dogs who no longer can. If an adult who used to sleep soundly suddenly needs to go at night again, see the vet first: the unexpected that keeps happening is no longer unexpected.
