Why the balcony ends in arguments
People who use the balcony for their dog’s business almost always do it out of necessity: long hours, an older dog, a high floor with no lift. And the balcony can work, but it has two enemies the living room does not: the slope and the neighbours. Pee on the floor runs towards the shared drain or towards the edge, and in summer the smell rises. Towels and spread-out training pads catch what lands on the floor, but a male who lifts his leg against the low wall or the railing sends the stream where no cloth is waiting for it.
The solution is not chasing the pee afterwards: it is giving him one single, closed place to do it.
The balcony corner done properly
A fixed spot, sheltered and away from the edge. Choose the corner most protected from rain and wind, never right up against the railing: your dog should aim inwards, not outwards. The first point of the Method applies: watch your dog first, then choose the spot. And once you have chosen it, do not move it too soon.

The smell: the part the neighbours notice
Pee drying on the balcony floor is the main source of the summer smell. With a closed tray, most of it disappears at the source: empty, rinse, done. For the floor around it, use an enzyme cleaner, which breaks the smell down instead of covering it: fragrance alone covers it for you, not for your dog’s nose, and he goes back to aiming where he smells his signpost. Being a good neighbour, in practice
No big rinses of fresh pee into the shared drain: collect first, rinse after. Empty the tray every day, twice a day in summer. And if a neighbour has already complained, what calms things down is showing that the problem is being handled: one single spot, closed and cleaned every day, is an argument people can see from the landing.
The balcony stays a plan B: walks cannot be replaced, and if your dog can go out, he should. PIPPI is for all the times when he can’t.
